High bacteria count closes Krull Park Beach in Olcott

OLCOTT – The Niagara County Health Department closed Krull Park Beach on the Lake Ontario shore in Olcott to swimmers Wednesday because of elevated bacteria levels in the water.

Ronald Gwozdek, principal public health engineer, said the test results on Tuesday’s daily water sample, returned to the department Wednesday, showed levels of e. coli bacteria far above the guidelines for safe swimming.

This is the first closure of the season at the beach, which has had a history of e. coli issues, the source of which remains an unsolved mystery. Gwozdek said more water will be sampled Thursday, and the soonest the beach could reopen, if the tests results are good, is Friday.
