Ennis, Eichel and Gronkowski nominated for ESPYs

Western New Yorkers have a hat trick of reasons to vote for the ESPYs after the nominations were announced this morning.

Jack Eichel, the Boston University hockey star who is expected to be selected as the Buffalo Sabres top draft choice on Friday, was nominated as best male college athlete.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski of Amherst was nominated as best comeback athlete.

And Buffalo Sabre Tyler Ennis was one of 16 nominees for best play for his incredible goal going backwards against the Montreal Canadiens.

Gronkowski may have the best chance to win. The other nominees in his category are Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls and skier Lindsey Vonn.

Eichel is competing with Wisconsin basketball star Frank Kaminsky, Oregon football star Marcus Mariota, Ohio State wrestler Logan Stieber and Vanderbilt baseball player Dansby Swanson.

Ennis is seeded No. 7 in the best play competition, with the incredible catch by New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham seeded No. 1.

The winners will be announced at 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15 when ESPN’s award show airs for the first time on ABC.
