Death of Batavia construction worker in Rochester confirmed

BATAVIA – David Campbell, 31, a Batavia construction worker drowned while working on a boat under the Inner Loop bridge in downtown Rochester Monday, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Wednesday.

Employed on the job by the Pike Company, Campbell drowned in the Genesee River when his work boat tipped over and he was stuck under the water because the safety line he was wearing had become stuck on an abutment.

Funeral services will be conducted here Saturday morning.

The Pike firm had been awarded $5.9 million by the State Department of Transportation to work on the bridge.

The Buffalo office of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration is reportedly investigating the incident.
