June 19, 1935 – June 23, 2015
Mary Louise Aepelbacher, a Depew native and librarian who loved reading and research, died Friday in a Lancaster nursing home. She was 79.
Mrs. Aepelbacher, known to friends as Mary Lou, worked as a medical librarian at the Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center in the 1950s after she earned her bachelor’s degree in library science from Geneseo State College. She then worked in Cheektowaga schools, where she tried to read every book in the library so she could better help students.
Mrs. Aepelbacher worked at North Hill Elementary School for about a decade until the late 1960s, when she moved to Cheektowaga Central High School, where she retired in 1994.
Her husband, Frederick, a decorated Korean War veteran, died in 2003. They held season tickets to the Buffalo Bandits games and played bridge and pinochle regularly with friends.
Mrs. Aepelbacher loved community activities. She was a member of the Arethusa Sorority at Geneseo. She regularly volunteered for the Lancaster library’s annual book drive.
When she lived at Lancaster’s Greenfield Health & Rehabilitation Center, she reorganized the library and was fond of recommending good books.
Mrs. Aepelbacher grew up a member of the Depew Methodist Church. As an adult raising a family she went to Cleveland Drive Presbyterian Church. In retirement she was a member of Lancaster Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by a brother Robert Allgeier, a daughter Lou Ann; a son Karl; and three grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Amigone Funeral Home, 5615 Broadway, Lancaster.
