June 22, 1960: Lucki-Urban banishes the thought of defrosting your freezer

People of our modern era expect to buy a freezer, plug it in and have it stay working and relatively intact for about 15 or 20 years, until it comes time to buy a new one.

As recently as 55 years ago today — when this Lucki-Urban ad appeared in The News — housewives could expect to spend plenty of time and lots of “shuffling food and pans of hot water” to remove the thick cakes of icy frost that would build up in the freezers of the 1930s, '40s and '50s.

It was a step above ice delivery, for sure, but the suburban dream of a frost-free refrigerator was a very real one — and one that the boys over at Lucki-Urban were happy to make come true.
