The Akron Community Band announces a theme-filled year as it opens its 93rd season at 8 p.m. July 3.
A program of patriotic tunes is planned as the Community Band plays the first of its eight 2015 summer concerts in Akron, which include a number of theme-based programs. “Christmas in July” returns July 24 with a variety of holiday selections, some prizes for the best-decorated “concert attendee” spaces, and treats in the refreshment stand.
“Pop Tune,” “Famous films,” and “Broadway” feature nights, as well as other themes, are planned throughout the summer, with details to follow.
Concerts, sponsored by the Village of Akron and Town of Newstead, begin at 8 p.m. in the Russell Park gazebo, Other concert dates are July 10, 17, 24 and 31. August concerts are set for Aug. 7, 14 and 21.
In addition to their concerts in Russell Park, the band performs in Alden’s Firemen’s Memorial Park two Wednesday evenings this summer: July 1 and July 22. The concerts are sponsored by the Town of Alden.
All concerts are free to the public. Lawn chairs and blankets are recommended. There is some seating available in Russell Park. The band presents varied programs with marches, show tunes, novelty numbers, overtures, pop tunes, and more. The band is directed by James F. Gerber.
