Escaped convict David Sweat has family ties to town near Friendship

Police continue to have a presence in the Town of Canisteo on Sunday, where escaped convict David Sweat’s grandmother lived on Bush Hill Road until her death two years ago at age 93, a local resident said.

A manhunt for Sweat and fellow escapee Richard Matt is underway in Friendship, which is about 40 miles from Canisteo.

Sweat’s mother, Pamela Sweat, now lives in Conklin, outside Binghamton, but other relatives may live in and around Canisteo, which is 50 minutes due east of Friendship, where the search has concentrated since Saturday.

Troopers first showed up in Canisteo the day after Sweat and Matt escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility, according to Hornell’s Evening Tribune. At the time, local police refused to confirm to the Evening Tribune that relatives of Sweat’s were the reason for the focus.

“That could include friends, family, acquaintances, former cellmates … the list is endless,” Bath-based Senior Investigator Curt Eaton told reporter Jason Jordan of the Hornell newspaper.
