LOCKPORT – The Common Council voted Wednesday to grant a permit to the operators of the Lockport Cave underground boat ride to build a platform near its ticket office to launch adventurous guests on zip lines over the Erie Canal, but the permission came with a string attached.
The Council ruled the special use permit doesn’t take effect until Hydraulic Race Co., owner of the cave, files written permission from the state Canal Corp. to build two other platforms on state land. Shane Mahar, spokesman for the Thruway Authority and the Canal Corp., reiterated Thursday that the company has yet to file an application for a state permit.
Thomas Callahan, co-owner of the company, had told the Council he wanted approval in time for the zipline attraction to be available for Lockport’s 150th anniversary celebration June 27 through July 5.
Mahar said, “We know he’s got an expedited timeline for this work.”
