Carmen A. D’Alessandro Sr., a former crane operator at Bethlehem Steel Corp., died Tuesday in Mercy Hospital. He was 76.
Born in Italy, Mr. D’Alessandro was a boxer there, and after coming to the United States, he operated a crane at Bethlehem Steel for 40 years.
Known to his friends and family as the “mayor of Lackawanna,” he was an usher at Our Lady of Victory Basilica for 20 years and was an active member of the Lake Erie Italian Club.
Mr. D’Alessandro is survived by a son, Carmen Jr.; a brother, Vincent; two sisters, Dolores Steffanci and Carmelina Kij; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Ridge Road and South Park Avenue, Lackawanna.
