NIAGARA FALLS – An alleged shoplifter will face burglary charges after he reportedly began attacking the security guard who tried to stop him Tuesday evening at a Home Depot store on Builder’s Way.
Michael A. Hurd, 35, of Ninth Street, was charged with petit larceny and attempted third-degree burglary at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Store security said Hurd took two drill combo sets valued at $199 each and a retractable utility knife. He used the knife to cut off the anti-theft device on the drill sets and then left the store without paying, according to a police report.
A security guard said he identified himself outside the store and then Hurd tried to flee. The security guard said when he attempted to grab Hurd, he became agitated and started punching, kicking and spitting at him. The store security guard brought Hurd under control with the help of an assistant store manager and he was held for police.
