HUGHES, Kay (Manning)

HUGHES - Kay (nee Manning)
Born on January 30, 1938, in Rugby, ND. She passed away in Houston, TX on February 10, 2015. Her family moved south early in her life and she lived in New Orleans, Lubbock, Houston and Austin. It was in Austin that she met Robert G. Hughes, Jr., at a Presbyterian Church college-age youth group. Romance blossomed and they were married on August 30, 1958. In 1973 they moved to Buffalo, where they spent the next 31 years. Kay is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert, and their loving daughter Kathy Lynn Brooks, her husband Patrick and their son, Davis, age 12. She is also survived by a large and loving family including her sisters, Donna Scoggins and Patti Dowling, and a special niece, Donna's daughter Maria Lurie. Surviving also are the many friends Kay had in Buffalo and those in Houston where she lived in retirement with Robert. Kay was a woman of great faith with a warm, generous heart who was deeply concerned with those who were distressed in some fashion. While in Buffalo, Kay worked in a social services agency in the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs. This was her most fulfilling professional job and she loved it. In later years, she did volunteer work in the Food Pantries of her churches in Buffalo and Houston, where she also found fulfillment. Kay's life was well-spent in love and service to family and church and she surely would not have had it any other way. A service of Remembrance will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 10:00 AM in University Presbyterian Church at the intersection of Niagara Falls Blvd. and Main Street. All are welcome.
