June 16, 1970: Griffin loses Democratic endorsement, plows ahead in State Senate primary

It wasn’t the first time, and it wouldn’t be the last time. Forty-five years ago this week, State Sen. (and, later, Mayor) James D. Griffin was fighting in a Democratic primary as an incumbent without the support of the Democratic party.

Griffin went on to serve four more terms in Albany before running as an independent and winning the 1977 Buffalo mayoral race.
