City Hallways (June 16) A higher power

Calendar Items
Lots of meetings today.
Planning board is this morning. Capello's Hair Salon proposed for 220 Franklin. The  Gates Circle Development Project also on the agenda.
Common Council has  Civil Service then Finance committee meetings this morning. Finance may get update on the $5 special events parking fee at Erie Basin Marina that's created a bit of consternation. Council's Community Development and Legislation committee meetings in the afternoon. There's lots of items in committee to discuss, but it's hard to say which ones will be put on the table.

 Springtime in Buffalo
One thing I noticed from all the agendas I'm seeing lately, lots of businesses want new outdoor cafes, patios and the like.
Check  out the requests:

  • 1487 Hertel - sidewalk cafe
  • 544 Niagara - outdoor cafe
  • 337 Ellicott/55 Huron - sidewalk patio
  • 674 Ellicott - sidewalk cafe
  • 1735 Hertel - sidewalk cafe
  • 976 Elmwood - outdoor cookie cart (I'll definitely report back to see if that gets approved.)

A higher power than the parking bureau
It's not unusual for many parking regulations to be suspended on weekends and evenings, so folks going to church on Sunday or synagogue on Friday nights don't generally have to deal with  lots of parking rules. That's not necessarily the case with Friday afternoon prayer services for Buffalo's Muslims. It can be tough finding a place to park when weekly congregational prayer is held from noon to 3 p.m. on Fridays at the Darul Uloom Islamic Center on Sobieski.  On nearby Sweet Street for example, there's alternative side of the street parking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The center is asking if the ban can be lifted from  noon to 3 p.m. on Fridays.

Today's Buffalo News and buffalonews.com I have a story on the Squaw Island name change and other on arbitration  ruling over the former Erie Basin Marina contract. City is owed $200,000.
