Sarah Godfrey-Singleton of Depew finds herself in the hunt after the first round of the New York State girls’ golf championship, which is taking place this weekend at the College Golf Club in Delhi.
Godfrey-Singleton shot a 1-over 73 to have sole possession of fourth place of the tournament. She’s five shots back of defending champion Lindsay May of Auburn in Section III.
Godfrey-Singleton had only one slip, taking a double bogey on No. 3. She got back to even par after birdies on Nos. 9 and 10. The junior then took a bogey on two of the next three holes, getting one shot back when she birdied 18.
Other scores from Section VI were: Marissa Delmonaco of Southwestern (77), Alexis Kim of Clarence (82), Elena Lopez of Clarence (87), Emily Isaacson of Jamestown (91), Marina Kessler (96) and Kirsta Whelock (106) of Fredonia, Sam Gaffney (98) and Simone Riter (104) of Williamsville East (98).
The tournament concludes Sunday.
Early start for rowers
The Canisius High School Lightweight Youth 8+ rowing team had to set its alarm clock mighty early Saturday morning at the Youth Nationals in Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla. Its scheduled heat on Friday night was rained out, forcing organizers to reschedule the race for Saturday morning at 7 a.m.
Canisius finished fifth out of seven boats, as the Norcal Crew boat captured the heat. Later Cansius finished fifth in a consolation event.
Elsewhere, in other consolation round action, the Canisius Youth 2 won its consolation event by about three-tenths of a second over the Norcal Crew team, but finished sixth in a semifinal event later in the day.
The Youth 4+ boat finished second in a consolation event, and was sixth in its semifinal.
