Lombardi pulls out of Lockport treasurer race; will open restaurant instead

LOCKPORT – Alderman John Lombardi III, who had announced his candidacy for City of Lockport treasurer, announced Wednesday he is pulling out of the race. Instead, the 1st Ward Republican said he will devote his time to operating an Italian restaurant he, his wife and a business partner are buying.

The Lombardis are acquiring DiCenzo’s Ristorante on West Avenue in Lockport and are expected to change the name to Lombardi’s Trattoria. Lombardi also will continue his connection with another family business, Overhead Door Co. of Lockport, where he’s worked for 30 years. All this leaves no time for politics, he said.

“I know exactly what is needed to bring a victory in a citywide race, and cannot dedicate the time or money necessary to assure that would happen,” he said.

Lombardi’s decision leaves incumbent Treasurer Michael E. White, a Republican, facing Democrat Sue A. Mawhiney, unless other candidates surface before the July 9 deadline to file nominating petitions.
