Customers using Apple Pay to check out at Wegmans will soon be able to bundle their Shopper Club cards into the digital wallet app.
In order to use the feature, customers will load their Shopper Club information to the Wallet app in iOS 9. While paying, discounts will automatically be applied to the transaction.
With iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus, users will hold the phone near the payment terminal with their finger on the Touch ID button. With Apple Watch, users will double-click the side button and hold the watch’s face up to the terminal.
Wegmans will be among the first grocery stores in the country to partner with Apple on the feature. It will be available this fall.
Apple Pay is a secure app that lets consumers digitally access their credit and debit accounts by waving an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch near a payment terminal at checkout. Card numbers are not stored on the Apple device or the Apple servers.
Wegmans also announced Monday it will open an 80,000-square-foot store in an urban, mixed-use development in Tysons Corner, Va.. The store is smaller than the company’s usual 120,000-square-feet stores, and will be located in a 5-million-square-foot campus anchored by Capital One bank. It’s a continuation of the grocer’s expansion into Virginia, which began in 2004. Wegmans will open its seventh Virginia store in Alexandria this weekend, which will be followed by two more in Richmond and Charlottesville.
