Killers from WNY: where they are now

Richard Matt is among the most notorious local killers who have been sent to prison. Here is a summary of some of the others:

Milton Jones and Theodore Simmons

Convicted in the murders of Rev. A. Joseph Bissonette and Monsignor David A. Herlihy over an 11-day period in 1987.

The victims were tied up, beaten and stabbed to death for pocket change in their East Side church rectories.

Prison: Both in Green Haven Correctional Facility, Stormville.

Jonathan L. Parker

Convicted in the April 1997 shooting death of Buffalo Police Officer Charles “Skip” McDougald. Parker opened fire on McDougald and his partner, Officer Michael Martinez, when they attempted to question him about a stolen van.

Prison: Great Meadow Correctional Facility, Comstock.

James C. Kopp

Killed Amherst physician Barnett A. Slepian, an advocate of abortion rights, in October 1998, firing the fatal shot from the woods behind Slepian’s home.

Prison: Federal Correctional Institution Beckley, Beaver, W. Va.

Frank W. Murphy

Ex-convict beat, stabbed and shot to death his estranged girlfriend, half brother and two family friends during a 64-hour rampage in 2001 as he searched for money to finance his drug habit.

Prison: Attica Correctional Facility.

Willie Jackson Jr.

Shot his girlfriend, killed her mother, then put the gun to the head of his 3-year-old daughter and killed her with two bullets in 2003, all after his girlfriend sought $10 more a week in child support.

Prison: Green Haven.

Justin Thompson and Domenick Sutton

Thompson killed three people execution-style in a Koons Avenue home in 2005.

Sutton fatally shot a woman as she held her baby daughter, in front of her 11-year-old son, outside.

Prison: Thompson in Elmira Correctional Facility; Sutton in Auburn Correctional Facility.

Ralph J. “Bucky” Phillips

Jail escapee shot a state trooper to death and wounded two others in 2006 after he broke out of Erie County’s Alden Correctional Facility.

Prison: Upstate Correctional Facility, Malone.

Varner Harris Jr.

Shot Buffalo Police Officer Patricia A. Parete twice as she and her partner responded to a fight call at West Chippewa Street and Whitney Place in 2006. Parete died more than six years after she was shot and paralyzed. Her death was classified as a homicide.

Prison: Great Meadow.

Altemio C. Sanchez

Bike Path Killer used coil of wire as signature device in nearly 30-year reign of terror that included killings of Linda S. Yalem in 1990, Majane Mazur in 1992 and Joan L. Diver in 2006.

Prison: Clinton Correctional Facility, Dannemora.

Craig M. Lynch

Killed Sister Karen Klimczak, director of a halfway house for recently paroled men, in her second-floor bedroom at that Grider Street facility in 2006.

Prison: Great Meadow.

Muzzammil S. “Mo” Hassan

Founder of Bridges TV stabbed and beheaded his wife, Aasiya Zubair Hassan, in their Orchard Park television studio in 2009, a week after she filed for divorce.

Prison: Clinton Correctional Facility, Dannemora.

Riccardo M. McCray

High school dropout known as “Murder Matt” killed four people and wounded four others in a shooting spree outside the former City Grill restaurant downtown in 2010.

Prison: Green Haven.

Ali-Mohamed Mohamud

Security guard taped a sock in the mouth of 10-year-old stepson Abdifatah “Abdi” Mohamud, bound his hands and struck the fifth-grader nearly 70 times with a baker’s rolling pin in 2012.

Prison: Clinton Correctional Facility.
