CHICAGO -- For the last 22 years, the top NHL draft prospects have visited with Don Cherry and Ron MacLean on Canadian television at the Stanley Cup final. It was Jack Eichel's turn Monday night in United Center.
Cherry recalled several prospects he's had on the show over the years, including five who play for the Lightning and Blackhawks. Patrick Kane was one of them, at a 2007 Ottawa-Anaheim game.
"I remember Kane," Cherry said. "He was so small, I thought he was a stickboy."
Eichel came to his appearance with a prop -- a USA Hockey golf shirt he presented to Cherry.
"It's a little gift from your guys south of the border for all your support to USA Hockey," Eichel said.
Eichel also spoke on the NBC Sports pregame show with Liam McHugh and Bob McKenzie. Asked if he could be a savior for the tortured fans of Buffalo sports, Eichel said, "It's a tough league to play in, especially as a young guy. I think you just try to find a role sooner than later and try to be an impact player. You try to not think about people calling you a savior or anything like that. There's a lot of good prospects."
