Flag-raising kicks off Juneteenth festival

A flag-raising ceremony Tuesday in Niagara Square marked the official kick-off of Buffalo’s Juneteenth festival.

While the festival itself will be held Saturday and Sunday in Martin Luther King Park, the flag-raising ceremony – in which the red, black, and green Pan-African flag is hoisted up the flag pole – brought local officials and Juneteenth Committee members together as prelude to the event. The festival, Mayor Byron W. Brown said, is a celebration of African-American culture that can be shared with the larger community. The is the 40th consecutive year Buffalo has held a Juneteenth Festival, he said.
