Panas tops district: Connor Panas of Canisius has been named the District II Player of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He’s the first Griffin and only the second player in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference history to earn the honor. Panas batted .372 with 17 doubles, seven triples, 11 homers and 68 RBIs in his senior season as the Griffs won the MAAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Panas homered in the NCAA opener, becoming the first Griff to go deep in an NCAA Tournament game. He also was the MAAC Championship Game MVP and received CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America status for the second time in his career. Panas hails from Fishkill.

WNIT-bound: St. Bonaventure’s women’s basketball team will make its first appearance in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament when it hosts a first-round game against an undetermined opponent Nov. 13 in the Reilly Center. Also in the field are Alabama State, Baylor, Chattanooga, Dartmouth, DePaul, Drexel, Indiana, Jacksonville, McNeese State, Siena, South Florida, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee State and Texas-Arlington. Bona’s opening opponent will be announced in the near future. All teams are guaranteed three games in the tournament, which is played on campus sites.

Griffs add to staff: Canisius College women’s basketball head coach Terry Zeh has added Kerrie James as an assistant coach and Kelly Kell as director of basketball operations. James most recently was an assistant coach at Lewis University. Kell was an assistant coach at D’Youville last season and played her last two years of college ball at Buffalo State.

Houghton names Allen: Former Niagara softball standout Brianna Allen is the new head coach of the softball program at Houghton College. Allen served at Houghton this past season as facilities marketing and scheduling coordinator and assistant softball coach. The Rochester native earned a bachelor’s degree in sport management with a concentration in facility operations from Niagara in 2012.
