Bemus Point man arrested for chasing fishermen with a machete

ELLERY – A 63-year-old Bemus Point man was arrested Sunday by State Police for allegedly chasing several fisherman in Dewittville along Chautauqua Lake with a machete.

Robert D. Thompson was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree menacing and second-degree harassment. The fisherman told state police Thompson came at them on Ellery-Centralia Road in Dewittville yelling and threatening them with the machete. They said he used the machete to slash one of their fishing poles in half before they escaped.

Thompson was released on $1,000 bail at his Ellery Town Court arraignment. An order of protection was issued to both fishermen and Thompson was ordered to return to the town court for further proceedings later in the week.
