Cornerstone Arena hosts skating skills competition

LOCKPORT – Cornerstone Arena’s Lockport Skating School will host its first basic skills competition, involving competitors from its figure skating and learn-to-skate programs, from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the arena, 34 Chestnut St.

Lockport skaters will comprise 31 of the 72 entrants, but their will be other competitors from across Western and Central New York and Ontario, Spectators are welcome and admission is free.

The competition will include 37 events, ranging from basic skills and basic hockey skills, followed by compulsory figures and free skating. Entrants range in age from 4 years old to adults.

“This event is the first of many,” said Dawn Ahlers, the arena’s figure skating director.

This summer, the arena is hosting two week-long kids’ fun camps, July 20-24 and Aug. 10-14, and two week-long figure skating camps, July 13-17 and Aug. 3-7, as well as learn-to-skate sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings through July and August.
