Local crews win seven medals

Western New York scholastic crews collected three silver medals and four bronzes in nine finals Sunday of the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association (CSSRA) Regatta on Martindale Pond in St. Catharines, Ont.

Canisius boats took two of the second-places finishes — the senior lightweight eight and senior four — while the St. Joe’s junior lightweight four took the other.

The Canisius senior lightweight four, junior eight and senior eight were third-place finishers as was the City Honors junior women’s four. Mount St. Mary was fourth in the women’s senior lightweight four event.

Crews from British Columbia won eight of the nine finals that local crews competed in. The exception was the Senior Men’s Lightweight Eight won by Upper Canada College of Toronto in 6:32.39. Canisius was fourth in that event.

The St. Joe’s four of stroke Charles Pratt, Robert Beaulieu, Ty Slaugenhoupt, Joshua Costolick and coxswain Charlie Ivancic finished only 2.36 seconds behind E.L. Crossley of British Columbia in the junior men’s lightweight four final.

Matt Kazmierczak, Max Tell, Nathanial Sabuda, Zachary Sebastian, and cox Jackson Kelly comprised the Canisius Junior Lightweight Four which finished second to St. George’s (B.C.). Antonio Guzman, Daniel Jordan, Patrick Boyd, William Kirsch, cox Freddy Drzewiecki made up the Canisius senior four, which was runner-up to Shawnigan (B.C.).
