Amherst man struck by own vehicle in grocery store parking lot

An Amherst man suffered a serious head injury Sunday afternoon in a grocery store parking lot when his vehicle was pushed into him by another vehicle, police said.

Donald L. Hendricks, 72, of Amherst, was struck about 3:25 p.m. at the Wegman’s on Sheridan Drive, according to Capt. Patrick McKenna of the Accident Investigation Unit.

A 2012 Chevrolet driven by Carl R. Bess, 75, of Williamsville, was pulling into a parking spot and hit Hendricks’ 2006 Saturn, which was parked in the spot directly in front of Bess, McKenna said.

Hendricks was struck by his own vehicle as he returned to his car after leaving the store, police said. After striking Hendricks, the Saturn then hit a parked car causing minor damage, police said.

Hendricks was taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and then transferred to Erie County Medical Center where he was listed late Sunday in stable condition in the intensive care unit.
