MARTIN, Harry T.

MARTIN - Harry T. January 17, 2015, beloved husband of Laura F. (nee Ferchen) Martin; devoted father of Leigh W. Martin of Dallas,
TX, Glen A. (Lynn) Martin of Chapel Hill, NC and Martha E. (late Joseph) Malkiewicz; loving grandfather of nine grandchildren and two great-grand- children. Born in Buffalo to Arthur R and Charlotte Martin. Harry started working with his father at the Buffalo Dry Dock in 1936. During the WWII, Harry was employed by General Electric to work on the ships serving in the Pacific. After the war, he was one of the first employees of the Playboy Motor Car Company that built the Playboy car in Buffalo. Hugh Hefner named his magazine after this car. He joined General Motors in 1949 and worked as a Foreman until his retirement in 1978. He was involved with the United Methodist Church for many years, first with the Epworth League, a group for young adults. It was in this group that he honed his skills as a song leader. He later became a well-known Square Dance and Contra Caller. He was a member of the National Railroad Society. As a child he was also active in model railroading, and as an adult he helped to build the model railroad displays at the Buffalo Historical Society. After retiring from General Motors, he became a driver for the Chautauqua Institute and enjoyed meeting Tony Bennet, Carol Channing, and other well-known performers and speakers. He and his wife moved into Wynwood of Kenmore where he remained active until his death. A Memorial Service will be held at Central Park United Methodist Church, 216 Beard Ave., Buffalo, NY 14214, Saturday, June 13th at 11:00 AM.
