Flash knock off Red Stars

Samantha Mewis scored her third goal of the season in the 51st minute and the Western New York Flash added two more within a span of two minutes in a 3-1 victory over the previously unbeaten Chicago Red Stars on Saturday night at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester.

Elizabeth Eddy assisted on the first goal with a touch pass to Mewis, who tucked her shot inside the far posts. Eddy scored herself in the 73rd minute, chipping a shot past Chicago goalkeeper Michele Dalton. Jamia Field blasted a shot from 30 feet that picked the top left corner in the 75th minute to make it 3-0.

Chantel Jones returned from a one-game league suspension to play in goal for the Flash. Late in the game she saved a Chicago penalty kick. That preserved the shutout until Sofia Huerta scored for Chicago during stoppage time.

The Red Stars are 4-1-3 for the season, the best record in the National Women’s Soccer League. After not playing for two weeks, the Flash evened their NWSL record to 3-3-1.

WNY will be off until a road game against the Houston Dash on June 20.
