Staff Sgt. Kevin S. Casey, air traffic controller

Jan. 15, 1988 – June 2, 2015

Air Force Staff Sgt. Kevin S. Casey, a decorated soldier who served as an air traffic controller, died Tuesday after suffering a head injury in an accident in St. Louis. He was 27.

Born in Niskayuna, he attended St. Mary of the Lake School in Hamburg before moving to the Syracuse area. He graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School and later joined the Air Force. He was stationed in Germany when he met Ronja Mueller; they married in June 2011.

After being deployed twice to Afghanistan, Sgt. Casey settled in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he served as an air traffic controller for the 80th Operations Support Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base.

He received numerous awards and decorations, including the USAF Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service twice. The first when he was a crew chief in Germany and Afghanistan and the second for his achievements while deployed to Kandahar in support of operation Enduring Freedom.

In addition to his wife of four years, he is survived by his parents, Hugh Casey and Gina Tornatore; two sisters, Seanne Casey Dattilo and Tara; and a brother, Samuel Tornatore.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 4737 Lakeshore Road, Hamburg.
