Road to the NHL Draft: Ivan Provorov

Ivan Provorov

Position: Defenseman

Junior team: Brandon (WHL)

Born: Yaroslavl, Russia

Measurables: 6-foot, 201 pounds

2014-15 stats: 60 games, 15 goals, 46 assists, 61 points

Central Scouting rank: No. 7 (North America)

Lowdown: Provorov, who moved to Pennsylvania to play hockey when he was 14, has embraced the physical side of the North American game. He loves to hit, and he quickly adapted to the intensity shown on smaller rinks. While he’ll eagerly talk about his defensive play, others will point to his work with the offense.

Provorov is a freewheeling puck-mover who torments opposing defenses. The Western Hockey League rookie finished fourth in scoring among blue-liners, putting up more than a point per game. He can quickly turn up ice and create scoring opportunities, either for himself or teammates. He’s in the conversation for best defenseman in the draft.

While he’s a complete player at both ends, he can jump into the rush too often. That’s something a stay-at-home partner can help his team overcome.

They said it: “He's very composed with the puck, has excellent vision and knows where everybody is on the ice. He has good hockey IQ and takes advantage when he sees an opening both offensively and defensively. He will play a physical game and can separate the man from the puck." – John Williams, NHL Central Scouting.

The Buffalo News is profiling 30 prospects in 30 days leading up to the NHL Draft, which will be held June 26-27.
