Rain postpones Brockport FWR games while C & D teams fall

Last year Clarence in Class AA, Williamsville South in Class A and Eden in Class B won Far West Regional playoff games in the State Public Schools softball tournament.

Now it will be up to Orchard Park, Starpoint and Alden on Saturday to keep Section VI in the winner’s circle.

The three were scheduled to play in the regional tripleheader at Brockport State on Friday, but the games were rained out and will be played Saturday.

Orchard Park will face Victor of Section V in the Class AA game at noon. Starpoint and V-Pittsford Mendon will meet at 2 p.m. in Class A and Alden will face V-Bath at 4 p.m. in Class B.

The Section VI Class C and Class D champions both bowed out in games played Friday at Pomenschenkel Stadium in Dunkirk.

Addison (21-2), the Section V Class D champion, pinned a 7-1 loss on Chautauqua Lake in the first game in Dunkirk.

Pine Valley fell in the regional final for the second year in a row, losing to Andover, 3-2. Arkport defeated the Panthers in last year’s regionals.

It was an uphill battle all the way for Pine Valley. Coach Danielle Arnone’s team twice rallied against winning pitcher Gretta Howland to tie the game, but gave up the lead run in the top of the sixth inning when Abby Miller drove home the game-winner.

Rebecca Butcher tripled and scored on a bunt single by Kaitlin Hoth for the second Pine Valley run.

In the bottom of the seventh the Panthers advanced a runner as far as third, but were unable to get the tying run home.

The losing pitcher was Jessica Wilcox, who as a freshman two years ago pitched Pine Valley over Andover in the regional playoff.

The Far West Regional winners will move on to the New York State Final Four June 13 in South Glens Falls.

Orchard Park, the ECIC I champion, defeated Clarence, 12-8, for the Section VI Class AA title last Saturday while Starpoint, which took the crown in ECIC II, triumphed over Williamsville East, 9-0, in Class A and Alden, the ECIC IV champ, edged Fredonia, 7-6, in Class B.
