BATAVIA – A 52-year-old man died Wednesday night when the all-terrain vehicle he was driving turned onto the driver’s side, partially ejecting and pinning him beneath the roll bar, the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office reported Thursday.
The accident happened at about 6:50 p.m. in a field near the intersection of Colby and Richley roads in the Town of Darien.
James E. Lipinski of Richley Road was driving near a tree line on a hill, deputies said, and it appeared he turned to the right at the bottom of the hill – either too quickly or too sharply. The ATV overturned. A 7-year-old girl, a family acquaintance, riding with Lipinski suffered bumps and bruises. Deputies said it’s unknown whether she was secured by a seatbelt or also was ejected.
The girl ran approximately a half-mile to another field where she and Lipinski had just spoken with Daniel Miller, a farmer. She told Miller what happened and led him back to Lipinski, deputies said.
Miller called 911 and directed emergency personnel to Lipinski and the crash scene.
Lipinski was pronounced dead at the scene by Genesee County Coroner Karen Lang. His body was taken to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office in Rochester, where an autopsy will be performed.
The girl was taken by ambulance to Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo for an evaluation.
A police investigation continues.
