Erma Ruth Martin, Psychiatric Center aide

Oct. 12, 1931 – May 30, 2015

Erma Ruth Martin, who worked for 30 years as a mental health aide for the Buffalo Psychiatric Center on Forest Avenue, died in Buffalo on Saturday. She was 83.

Throughout her career, beginning in 1956, she believed people with mental illness were unfairly shunned by society.

She was born in Fitzgerald, Ga., and moved to New Jersey. At a family member’s suggestion, she applied to the Psychiatric Center and moved here to take the job.

Ms. Martin was a member of Emmanuel Temple Church on Richmond Avenue and, in more recent years, the Greater Faith Bible Tabernacle Church on Edison Avenue.

In 1994, she moved to Gainesville, Fla. Three years ago she moved back to Buffalo to be closer to her family.

She is survived by her son, Gregory Patterson; two granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family plans a private funeral service.
