Milano's Pizzeria closed in Tonawanda

Milano's Pizzeria & Family Restaurant, a neighborhood mainstay for more than 30 years, has closed.

The restaurant, at 529 Englewood Ave., Tonawanda, has been serving pizza, pasta and more to generations. The restaurant has been dark for a week or more, neighbors said, and its phone is disconnected.

Milano’s has been at the same spot on Englewood since the early 1980s. It started as a pizzeria only and later added a sit-down Italian restaurant.

It had its quirks: Milano’s had no online presence to speak of. It accepted credit cards, but a credit card order necessitated the receipt being given to an employee who would go elsewhere and process it somewhere else.

Milano’s was a neighborhood favorite, sparking conversations among residents about its place in the region’s pizza pantheon. The pizza ovens were visible from the counter and customers waiting for their order watched as the pizzas came out and were cut and boxed.

A 2005 review found "hearty homestyle cooking."
