June 3, 1930: Jimmy Slattery forfeits purse as 'dull, tiresome' match is called

The photo shows Buffalo’s champ Jimmy Slattery making a lunge, but the referee halted the match after the seventh round, calling it a no-contest. The Associated Press reported that both fighters were warned twice “to improve the fight,” but the crowd was irritated from the beginning by Slattery’s “dancing” and his opponent, Pete Latzo’s “bobbing.”

The calling of the fight meant forfeiture of the purses-- $6,000 for Slattery and $5,000 for Latzo.
