Vigil for boy killed at Delaware Park scheduled for Tuesday night

A vigil to support the family of Maksym Sugorovskiy, who was killed in Delaware Park on Saturday, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Concerned citizens are asked to gather at the “Hunter and the Dog” statue on the park’s Ring Road for the vigil. Participants are also asked to wear green — Maksym’s favorite color, according to a post on the Parents For A Safe Delaware Park page on Facebook.

“If anyone has any green to wear, he loved that color,” according to the post attributed to a Sugorovskiy family spokesman. “Maksym recently took quite a liking to Kermit the Frog, but I don’t want to discredit Woody either! They were two of his favorite characters.”

Those gathered will walk to the zoo, then out to Parkside Avenue, down to Route 198, and down the side of the road to the site where a car left the Scajaquada Expressway, crossed the median and struck and killed the three-year-old boy and critically injured his five-year-old sister as they were walking on the Ring Road with their mother.

At the memorial site, organizers plan to play the song “Rainbow Connection” in Maksym’s memory, the Facebook post said.

In addition to showing support for the family, the vigil is intended improve the safety of the Delaware Park community.

The Delaware Soccer Club cancelled practice Tuesday night so that families and players can attend the vigil. The Sugorovskiys were walking back to their car following their daughter’s soccer game Saturday in the park when the incident occurred.
