Richard Anthony Baca Sr. of Cheektowaga, a Buffalo News employee who was active in church and civic organizations, died Saturday at Clare Bridge of Williamsville after a long illness. He was 77.
A lifelong Buffalonian, he attended School 57 and Hutchinson-Central Technical High School.
He worked for Zolte’s & Ledermann’s Furniture from 1956 to 1979, when it closed, and then worked in the mailroom at the Buffalo News from 1979 to 2003. He retired in 2003.
“Papi,” as he was fondly known, was an active member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, serving as a Eucharistic minister and trustee for the parish. He was a past president of the St. Stanislaus Athletic Club, one of the original members of the parish council, a member of the school financial committee, past chairman of Friday night bingo, in addition to various other committees and activities. He was a member of the Father Justin Council 5670 Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Baca was the recipient of the Knights of Columbus Family of the Year award from the Father Justin Council and the St. Joseph the Worker Award from the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Helen Grabowski; a daughter, Robin A. Burzynski; two sons, Richard A. Jr. and Rodney A.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 34 Francis St., Sloan.
