South Buffalo Alive will celebrate completion of the renovation of the Firemen’s Monument at the entrance to Olmsted’s Cazenovia Park, at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 14 — Flag Day.
As part of the ceremony, officials will raise a flag on the site’s new flagpole, a gift of South Buffalo Alive and community supporters. The flag that will fly over the monument was donated by Don Colpoys, whose brother Matthew Colpoys was killed along with four fellow Buffalo firefighters in a propane explosion on Dec. 27, 1983. The flag was on the coffin of their father, the late Ed Colpoys, who was a World War II veteran.
New lighting at the monument has been gifted by the City of Buffalo, while Stone Art Memorial donated its services to clean the statue. Crews from the City of Buffalo and the Olmsted Parks also worked hard to make this possible.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the event.
