Let contractors fix, sell ‘zombie’ homes
It’s great that M&T Bank and 10 other major mortgage lenders have agreed to monitor and maintain vacant properties. Changing locks, boarding up windows and posting contact information further adds to the situation.
Why can’t these “zombie” homes be made available to local contractors for rehabilitation and resale to a market that can’t handle the “new home” prices? That would stimulate local business, put some people to work and get the taxes paid by someone contributing to the local economy instead of someone in an ivory tower somewhere who basically has no interest in the local economy.
I guess it sounds too easy to be practical, but wouldn’t it be worth a little thought? The property could be rehabbed before it becomes a “zombie.”
