Iraq War vet, on national bike ride, to speak in Buffalo school

Brian D’Apice, an Iraq War veteran from York County, Pa., who is on a year-long bicycle trek across the United States and back, arrived Tuesday in Buffalo.

D’Apice, a former Army sergeant, said he will speak to students at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Harvey Austin School 97, 1405 Sycamore St., about his journey, which began May 4 in New York City. He plans to pedal to Seattle, then down the Pacific coast to San Diego and eastward to the Florida Keys before returning to the Big Apple next May.

D’Apice, who served two tours of duty in Iraq, is raising money for two educational charities: Pencils of Promise and Connecting Families. The former builds schools and trains teachers in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Africa; the second is focused on medical services to the poor in Jakarta, Indonesia, where D’Apice taught for a year after leaving the Army and earning a teaching degree.

So far, he has raised more than $11,000. Information about donating can be found on his website,
