Daemen College is holding a one-day education program on caring for individuals with developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or frail from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 16 in the college’s Wick Campus Center Social Room, 4380 Main St., Amherst. The free program includes sessions on communications and advocacy, accessing community resources, legal considerations and bridging care for children, adults and families. HART Interfaith, a home-assistance referral program that provides the elderly and infirm with assistance allowing them to remain independent in their homes, is holding its annual awards celebration on June 10 at Niagara Falls Country Club, 505 Mountain View Drive, Lewiston. A basket and gift certificate preview will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30. This year’s theme, “Reflecting on the Past ... Local poets from the Writing and Well-Being Workshop at the Mental Health Association and Restoration Society Inc. will showcase their poetry from 5:30 to 7 p.m. June 9 with a community reading and reception at Talking Leaves Bookstore, 3158 Main St. To attend or to participate in the reading, contact Lisa Maria Cruz at 886-1242, Ext. 310 by June 8. Program is free of charge and open to the community.

MICA Support Group meets from 2 to 3 p.m. every Thursday at Empowerment Academy, 327 Elm St. The group is designed for individuals dually diagnosed with a mental illness and chemically addicted. For more information, call 884-5216.

ACE Employment Services, 327 Elm St. (second floor), a program of Restoration Society Inc., offers a variety of flexible employment services designed to get and keep adults with a mental health disability working. Free services include benefit advisement, job preparation, placement, development and career consultation. Social Security Administration certified employment network. Western New York Independent Living Inc. offers a self-defense awareness group, specifically designed for personal protection and confidence-building for people with disabilities, at noon every Friday in its facility located at 3108 Main St. The group will provide options to being mistreated and abused, address scenarios to avoid, tackle and control confrontation in realistic situations. Modified martial art techniques will be demonstrated including judo, jujitsu and aikido. For more information, call 836-0822.

Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service is hosting its “Book Sale for the Blind” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday at 1199 Harlem Road, Cheektowaga. Proceeds will benefit the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service, which broadcasts daily readings of newspapers, magazines, books and other printed matter to area print-handicapped individuals who are given “reading radios.” For more information, call 821-5555.
