The number of bankruptcy cases filed in Buffalo rose slightly in May from a year ago, the first such increase since September 2013.
A total of 287 cases were filed, up 0.7 percent from 285 a year ago, according to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. While the total was virtually unchanged from 2014, an increase of any size for the Buffalo filings is uncommon in recent years.
Through the first five months of the year, bankruptcy filings in Buffalo were still down 9.4 percent.
For the entire Buffalo-Rochester market, filings dropped 6.5 percent in May, and declined 10.3 percent through the first five months. The total through May, 1,924, was down nearly 50 percent from the same period in 2010.
