Where we live: Amherst

Money for new equipment is headed for the Ellicott Creek Volunteer Fire Co. and its 60 volunteers.

A grant of $18,572 from the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has been awarded to the Amherst fire company for new helmets, announced Rep. Brian Higgins, D-Buffalo.

The new helmets are “much needed” to replace helmets that are “either out of compliance or very close to it,” said Ellicott Creek Chief Joe Osika.

“This award supports Ellicott Creek firefighters with equipment that protects their safety as they work around the clock to protect the safety of others,” Higgins said.

The grant program will award $340 million in grants to fire departments nationwide this year.

Ellicott Creek last received a direct federal fire grant in 2003 for a firefighter accountability system – still in use today – which helps track firefighters at the scene of a fire.
