Three University at Buffalo athletes earned berths in the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships with their performances in the NCAA East preliminaries, which ended on Saturday in Jacksonville, Fla. Each had top 12 performances in their events.
Senior Jonathan Jones will make his third straight appearance in the shot put at the NCAA meet after he finished third Saturday with a toss of 65 feet, 5.4 inches. A five-time All-American, Jones will be attending his sixth straight NCAA meet.
Jones will be joined by juniors Ryan Billian and Mike Morgan.
Billian was 10th in the 100-meter dash quarterfinals on Friday,
Morgan, who has the 12th-best decathlon performance in the nation this season with 7,538, will compete in that event in the nationals in Eugene, Ore. June 10-13.
The Bulls’ 4x100 relay team of senior Darien Johnson, sophomore Joshua Gali, junior Brian Cummisekey and Billian narrowly missed qualifying for the trip to Oregon, finishing 14th among 24 teams in 40.06 seconds.
They were fifth in their heat with the second-fastest time in UB history and their best this season.
Senior Emma Siuciak tied for 33rd place, clearing 5-6.9 in the high jump.
At the NCAA Championships, the men’s 100 semifinals will go off at 8:16 p.m. EDT on June 10 while the shot put will commence moments later. The decathlon will be June 10 and 11.
