Airman from Fredonia killed in accident in Germany

An Airman from Fredonia was killed this week in a traffic accident in Germany.

Air Force Staff Sgt. Michael Klose, 24, died Sunday in an accident near Daun, located about 25 miles from Spangdahlem Air Base where Klose was stationed since December 2011, according to Air Force public affairs.

Additional details about the accident were not available.

Klose was a 2009 graduate of Fredonia High School, according to the Dunkirk Observer.

Klose, a member of the 52nd Equipment Maintenance Squadron, was posthumously awarded the rank of staff sergeant. A memorial service was held at the base on Thursday.

“Mike was a tremendous Airman – a maintainer’s maintainer,” Maj. Bryan Wong, the squadron’s commander, said in a prepared statement. “He had a contagious smile that brightened everyone’s mood and had an outgoing personality that drew people to him. He had a positive impact not only to the squadron, but to everyone he met. He will be sorely missed.”
