Grand Island woman, 59, dies after being stricken in Tonawanda jail cell

A 59-year-old Grand Island woman arrested Wednesday evening in the Town of Tonawanda for driving while ability impaired suffered a medical emergency in her jail cell early Thursday morning and died at a local hospital, police said.

The woman, identified as Peggy Gaiser, was under constant supervision by a police matron who noticed about 1 a.m. that she had stopped breathing, police said. The matron performed CPR and the woman was transported to Kenmore Mercy Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

An autopsy did not indicate the cause of death, police said, and officials are awaiting the results of a toxicology test.

Police said the woman’s arrest did not involve a struggle or use of force.
