Graham to lead Hilbert: Orchard Park native Melissa Graham, the 2013 SUNYAC women’s basketball player of the year at Geneseo, has been named the head coach of women’s basketball at Hilbert College.
Graham totaled 1,042 points, 732 rebounds, 295 assists and 115 blocks in 110 games at Geneseo, which went 78-32 during her career. She graduated with a degree in biology and minors in environmental studies and psychology. She is pursuing a master’s in psychology at UB.
Additionally, Graham has been a head or assistant coach of lacrosse, basketball and soccer at Mount Mercy Academy, her alma mater, and served two years as a graduate assistant at Hilbert in sports information and game-day coordination.
“Melissa has been with us for the last two years in her graduate assistant role within our department and has shown a great work ethic and passion for Hilbert athletics,” John Czarnecki, athletics director, said in a college release. “As a young up-and-coming talent in the collegiate coaching world, I am confident in her ability to lead this program to new heights, and we all look forward to great things from Melissa.”
Rusk earns honor: Hobart sophomore Michael Rusk (Williamsville East) was named first-team All-Liberty League in singles. He was 13-12 overall for the Statesmen, 7-9 at first singles and earned a weekly singles-player-of-the-week honor during the season.
Making the grade: UB senior Laura Fernandez was named to the Mid-American Conference All-Academic Team in women’s tennis. Fernandez, who was 9-12 in singles and 13-10 in doubles, majors in communications.
