The number of NHL coaching searches continues to shrink.
St. Louis, which looked like the most attractive landing spot of all, decided Tuesday to keep Ken Hitchcock for one more season. Their contract extension leaves Buffalo, San Jose, Detroit and New Jersey as the teams without a coach, though the Red Wings are all but certain to promote Jeff Blashill from their minor-league team.
St. Louis won the Central Division but suffered another first-round elimination in the playoffs. A new coach would have inherited a team built to win. The Blues decided Hitchcock gives them the best chance over any available coaches.
Buffalo is expected to interview Dan Bylsma this week.
