A 46-year-old Town of Lewiston man riding an all-terrain vehicle in his friend’s backyard was killed Sunday morning, when the ATV partially flipped over and ejected him, sending him into a piece of machinery, Lewiston police reported.
David A. Cleveley suffered a fatal head injury after losing control of the vehicle. Cleveley, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lewiston police said Cleveley and his wife were at the friend’s house when the mishap occurred in the large backyard. Emergency personnel were summoned shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday to the accident in the 1100 block of Saunders Settlement Road.
“We don’t know if alcohol was involved,” Lewiston Police Sgt. Frank Previte said. “We have to wait for the toxicology report from the coroner.”
Speed may have been a factor, Previte added.
No charges have been filed, and police still were investigating the case, with the help of Niagara County sheriff’s accident-reconstruction experts.
