Crash with injuries closes I-190 north, backs traffic up onto Grand Island

NIAGARA FALLS – The I-190 northbound reopened shortly after 5:15 p.m. Saturday after State Police cleared a crash that caused a major traffic backup onto Grand Island, according to the Niagara International Transportation Technology Coalition.

Although there were some injuries in the five-vehicle crash, which was reported at 4:08 p.m., they were non-life-threatening, according to police. While the Thruway was closed, all northbound traffic was forced to exit onto the Buffalo Avenue/Robert Moses Parkway exit, according to State Thruway traffic cameras.

At one point, the backup extended about 3½ miles to the Whitehaven Road exit on Grand Island, NITTEC reported.

The parkway/Buffalo Avenue exit is near the base of the northbound North Grand Island Bridge in Niagara Falls, just over the Niagara River.
