With residents of Texas picking up the pieces in areas slammed by recent tornadoes, local American Red Cross volunteers are heading south to do their part.
Tom Daley of Tonawanda will be supervising client casework, helping storm victims connect with the services they need to put their homes and lives back together. Greg Langen and Sarah Perkins, both of Pittsford, will be assessing the damage in the stricken areas to determine what other immediate and ongoing assistance will be needed.
A tornado on May 10 killed couple in Van, Texas and destroyed or damaged more than 100 homes. This week, a cluster of 10 less forceful twisters went through North Texas in one night. The National Weather Service reports there have been at least 24 tornadoes in North Texas this season, compared with a total of four in 2014.
In response to the severe weather outbreak, which also included flooding, the Red Cross has opened 15 shelters for residents and served close to 19,000 meals.
