Clarence IDA never gave Gildan a penny
On May 9 The News published a letter from a writer who stated that Gildan had received $54,000 from the Town of Clarence Industrial Development Agency. This is untrue. If he had bothered to do his homework, he would have known that Gildan purchased New Buffalo Shirt in 2013, 17 years after the Clarence IDA gave a struggling T-shirt printer/promoter named John Weiss a tax exemption to add 11,400 square feet of manufacturing space and to keep 90 full- and part-time jobs in the Town of Clarence back in 1996. The Clarence IDA never gave “billion-dollar multinational corporation” Gildan a penny.
Furthermore, the writer’s guess about my ideas regarding employer subsidies is false as well. The next time he writes to The News, I would suggest he do some quality research to support his views. In the words of former New York Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts.”
